I've just downloaded a gento Iso (the one with all 3 stages) and I would like to know which packages (sources) are on that cd, excluding system progs (ie kde, netscape...).

No program sources are on the CD. The stage 3 ISO contains precompiled binaries for a working i686 system, a functional version of Portage, and the kernel source tree. Everything else (X, KDE, GNOME, links, etc.) has to be downloaded.
