Ok I will try to explain the problem the best that I can.
I have a western digital 1tb element usb harddrive. I have it partitioned into 2 separate partitions each right around 500/500. One partition is jfs and one is xfs. I had about 70% or so of the capacity filled mainly with music files. I was copying some new music into the drive and was running "exaile" music player. I clicked the rescan collection button on exaile and suddenly my collection shrunt to like 2 albums (from like 6000 songs). I figured it must have been just a problem with the player. Well, I started exploring the the contents of the usb hard drive where the music files are stored. All the directories are there. But there is nothing in the directories. On the main partition with my "tagged" music there is only 1.2 gb of material ... down from like 350+ gb.
I have no freakin idea what happened. The drive is not making any funny noices. Dmesg gave no indication of i/o errors or anything like that. And this disappearance seemed to have happened in an instant.
If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I would love to be able to recover about 2 years of downloading dead and phish from etree and then pain stakingly manually tagging them with easytag.
Also, I am currently running the wd diagnostic program on windows (in my dual boot) to see if there are any problems with the drive. I also did not add any new data to the USB drive in the hopes that it can be saved if not overwritten.
Thanks,

well just an update ... I basically have lost all my music now ... I plugged my ipod in to try to backup those songs that I have ... and wammy ... 10 minutes later after trying to transfer files it is almost completely emply (down from 20 gig to 900 mb) ... so this is definitely something related to my gentoo system and not my hardware as the extended test on my wd drive turned out fine too (9+ hours).
Here is some info:
