Ok. I am using the most recent development kernel and I am having trouble booting with RAID 0.

Here is the error:

Code:

VFS: Cannot open root device "ataraid/disc0/part" or unknown-clock(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

My grub.conf entry for this kernel is:

Code:

title=Gentoo(beta)
root (hd0,1) #boot partition
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/ataraid/disc0/part4 pci=noacpi

Here is my hardware:
Athlon XP 2600+
Gigabyte 7VAXP
VIA KT400
Promise 20276 Raid Controller

Partition scheme is set up like this (in /dev/ataraid terms)

/dev/ataraid/disc0/part1 : Win2k
/dev/ataraid/disc0/part2 : Gentoo boot partition (ext3)
/dev/ataraid/disc0/part3 : Swap
/dev/ataraid/disc0/part4 : Gentoo root filesyste (Reiserfs)

any ideas?

I tried to upgrade to 2.6.0-test8, but I encountered the same problem. I'm currently booting 2.4.20-r7 on my RAID0 without any problems.

Hi there,

As far as I know, the ataraid stuff "Just Doesn't Work"TM with the 2.6 kernels as yet - I've yet to be able to get it to work with my hpt372 controller, and I would imagine the Promise stuff would be pretty similar.

I'm sticking to ac-sources or gs-sources until I see the option for ataraid appearing in the menuconfig again.

Also, shouldn't this be in the hardware section?

I might add that IDE Raid controllers are not supported in 2.6 as the interface has yet to be ported to the new Device-mapper - at least I think so, as it's still on Andrews Must-fix list after the last revision a few days ago.

Software RAID setups, using the md driver is fine though, I had one running on 2.6.

Come on taskara, stop teasing us like that. :)

Where is ataraid (or equivalent) support in the 2.6 kernels ?

In the kernel config relevant option are under Device Drivers / ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support

I checked both "PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support" and "Special FastTrak Feature" since I have a Promise PDC20276. Of course, under "Multi-device support (RAID and LVM)" I also checked "RAID support" and "RAID-0 (striping) mode" since I'm using that. So far, I did not enable "Device mapper support" here, should I do that?

BTW the config options are a little confusing. Under "SCSI device support" and "SCSI low-level drivers" I discovered several ATARAID controllers. One of them has the following comment:
Quote:
3ware Hardware ATA-RAID support (BLK_DEV_3W_XXXX_RAID)

3ware is the only hardware ATA-Raid product in Linux to date.
This card is 2,4, or 8 channel master mode support only.
SCSI support required!!!

<http://www.3ware.com/>

Please read the comments at the top of
<file:drivers/scsi/3w-xxxx.c>.
I had not compiled beta9 yet, I'm trying now...

if you have a Promise PDC20276 controller, then all u need to include is
Code:
"PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support"

to get linux to see your raid controller

So this would mean that I have to deselect a feature which seems to apply to my situation, and is documented as
Code:
Special FastTrak Feature (PDC202XX_FORCE)

For FastTrak enable overriding BIOS.
because my controller is an integrated one into the MoBo (ASIC solution) and lists as a MB/133 FastTrak. I would expect to have to turn it on. Moreover, studing the driver source (/usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test9/drivers/ide/pci/pdc202xx_new.h) makes me believe that this option was precisely introduced for this controller.

But perhaps more importantly, what is the required naming convention? It seems that /dev/ataraid/disc0/part... only applies to 2.4 kernels. What should it be in 2.6?

I havent tested it, but I believe in 2.6 it comes up as a scsi device.

so /dev/sda

but I guess this needs to be tested.

booting to the 2.6 live cd should give u some idea

No luck from that 2.6 LiveCD... :( there are no devices /dev/sd... nor /dev/ata*. fdisk suggest the name /dev/rd/c0d0 but a
Code:
ls -l /dev/rd
only shows 16 items "0".."15" which I suspect to be RAMdisks.

yes I tried both
Code:
gentoo doataraid
and
Code:
acpi doataraid
but the latter didn't work because it could not find an acpi kernel. This was no problem since the first option seemed to switch on ACPI by itself. I even tried
Code:
gentoo doataraid noraid
to disable EVMS.

The output showed
Code:
--- Beginning ata detection
which was caused by the doataraid option. The output from dmesg showed (excerpt):
Code:
PDC20276: chipset revision 1
PDC20276: 100% native mode on irq 12
PDC20276: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
The latter line indicates a problem, as I mentioned in another post some time ago. Maybe it's caused by not enabling the "special FastTrak feature" I mentioned before? Anyway, lsmod does not show any RAID modules loaded.

Yes could be, but I feel I'm not getting anywhere...

Taskara, after spending some time on this, when I consider other posts in this thread I feel that it is not (yet) supported yet in 2.6, can you convince me otherwise?

Arg...I'm tired of waiting! I'm dying to get this kernel on my desktop. As of now, I'm only running it on my crappy laptop. It's working fine, but as far as I can tell, the "out of the box"-ALSA-feature did not work "just like that" on my Inspiron 7000. As of 2.6.0-test9 that is. Did I miss something? Although I must find a way to ceep myself occupied while waiting for the ataraid-thing - nevertheless, It would be quite nice just to get a few hints :)

Alsa and everything else worked great on my laptop, and with test8, my laptop can _finally_ suspend to disk, even from X! It dramatically cuts down on my bootup and shutdown times.

Anyway, back to RAID. I'm impatient as well. Bring it forth!!!

I don't think 2.6 will have ANY raid controller support (except hardware controllers like 3ware)

because 2.6 is now frozen - bug fixes only

so I assume they can't add raid support any time before it's released.

so it looks like it's either 2.4 kernel, or a 3rd party 2.6 driver, or linux software raid for the next couple of years..

Uh... I need some mirroring action for some data intensive applications. If I have to downgrade to 2.6 I'll shoot myself.

You meant to say: ... downgrade to to 2.4 ... I assume?
