Hi,

Just got me a core i7 920. Trying to download an installer, and I'm not sure if this is supposed to be x86 or ia64? I know it's 64-bit, but it isn't listed in the itanium family.

Thanks.

There is no immediately obvious place to find this information. I looked in the Handbook for each type, and they don't list CPU types.

I see a few posts in the forum, now that I tweaked the terms a bit.

Wow, that's bizarre to me.

Thanks for the help.

The AMD64 releases cover both Intel and AMD architectures. The name "AMD64" is purely due to AMD having released a 64-bit chipset first and doesn't reflect an "AMD-specific" build. So it's definitely what you want.

Thanks much. Downloading now.

I believe you d2, it was just a shocker.

The wikipedia page helps.

Is your setup working well d2, maybe I can look here for config suggestions if I don't see it in my docs.

Thanks again.

I saw that, but I figured since "Core 2 Duo" was a market name rather than a physical description, then "i7" would be mentioned in there too.

d2_racing, can you post your make.conf for me? I figure most of this stuff is generated for you, and I'm trying to set my stuff up.

Thanks.

d2,

If you want a significant speed improvement during your builds, here's a couple tricks:

Use -j9 instead of -j5

Mount a tmpfs on /var/tmp/portage with 3 or 4 g space.

Thanks for the help though.

Using -j9 can jam the CPU or overcharge it sometime, 5 thread is enough on my box.

And for tmpfs, I already know that twist and it improve the performance a lot :P
