|
|
Just wondering if anyone knows of any type of free internet access (like Juno) that is compatible with Linux. I'm trying to set up a Gentoo box for a buddy of mine who has never touched a computer before and wants to try out the internet before paying for a premium service. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a free (ad based) Linux compatible service here in Canada (I stumbled upon one in the U.K. though!). |

I'm guessing this is just a dial up account like any other...and Linux will handle those just fine as long as you do like PPP or SLIP...and get it to work with your modem.
Most any provider I know of, shy of AOL....and maybe even them, use standard TCP/IP....
Many moons ago, I used to use PPP on dial up for different isp's...
Give it a try with juno...?
The only thing you might have a problem with, is that as I understand it in the past, those free isps required you to use their browsers that had ads on them...and probably monitored your web usage for ads and data collecting...in which case, they may not have a windoze version...but, hell, sign up with something cheap....there are plenty of them that are like $12 a month or so....give www.ispwest.com a try, and there are many others...

Yeah, well I was gonna have him sign up with cheap internet access only if I couldn't find a free one for him to try first. Juno specifically says that they don't support Linux systems. They make you connect using their software which shows you ads and they don't have a version for Linux. |

Hello,
I was able to get some free access by using the free trial offered by AOL. There is a program that lets you log on to their dialup using any pre-configured account that runs in linux.
It's called penggy or pengAOL. or something like that. _________________ Jonathan S. Romero
