Every time I create a new file, the file gets owned by me (as it should be), but the group is the group of another user. Shouldn't it also be me? If not, how can I change it so that all new files created by me in my home directory and owned by me AND are in my group?

Look at the output of
is the gid the same as the group of your new files?
you can change that with the usermod command. |
