Hi!
I have recently updated video drivers, kernel and Xorg on my laptop. Starting X freezes the system completely. There is only blank screen with a cursor (_) in top-left corner. The system is not responding to any of key combinations (e. g. magic keys, ctrl+alt+del, etc.). Logs (/var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg*) are completely empty.

I tried following software versions getting the same results:
Xorg: 1.7.0 (stable), 1.7.99.1(from git, x11 overlay)
Kernel: 2.6.24; 2.6.27; 2.6.30; 2.6.31 (with and without KMS)
Video drivers: xf86-intel-video-2.9.0 (stable), 9999 (git, x11 overlay)

I would appreciate for any help.

Here is all the necessary info about my system:

Code:
# emerge --info

Remove everything from your xorg.conf except input sections (since you're on a hal-less server). Of course, backup your config.

xorg-server-1.7 is installed correctly, complete with all dependencies?

And what about Device section? Or I need to modify my xorg.conf like this?
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "kbd"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "auto"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

Sure, emerge was successful, revdep-rebuild says "all ok"...

emerge and revdep-rebuild worked for me too, but the respective ebuilds are in a somewhat experimental state, so here is my unmask list for an ~amd64 system to get the basis of a working xorg-server-1.7:

Code:
=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-9999
=x11-proto/xproto-7.0*
=x11-proto/randrproto-1.3*
=x11-proto/xcb-proto-1.5*
=x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.6*
=x11-libs/libxcb-1.4*
=x11-libs/libX11-1.3*
=x11-libs/libXrandr-1.3*
=x11-libs/libXfont-1.4*
=x11-apps/xrandr-1.3*
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.7*
=x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.7*
=x11-libs/libXi-1.3*
=x11-libs/libXinerama-1.1*
=x11-proto/inputproto-2.0*
=x11-libs/libXext-1.1*
=x11-proto/xextproto-7.1*
=x11-proto/recordproto-1.14*
=x11-proto/renderproto-0.11*
=x11-proto/fixesproto-4.1*
=x11-proto/xf86vidmodeproto-2.3*
=x11-proto/xineramaproto-1.2*
=x11-proto/bigreqsproto-1.1*
=x11-proto/xf86dgaproto-2.1*
=x11-proto/scrnsaverproto-1.2*
=x11-proto/xf86driproto-2.1*
=x11-proto/xcmiscproto-1.2*
=x11-libs/libXScrnSaver-1.2*
=x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.3*

There's no garantee for completeness apart from 'worksforme' (and I only got there by tracking down issues with other failing packages), and you might want to keep xf86-video-intel-9999 because it's already far ahead of 2.9.0 since a recent commit.
