hey,
my last system update containted amongst a lot of other things after holidays
xorg-server update from 1.5.3-r6 to 1.6.3.901-r2 . After restart though, X wouldn't
start anymore. It will only show a blank screen with a non blinking command line
cursor and no reaction to any keyboard input.
ssh login from another machine is working, the rest of the system still runs
fine then. I can find no error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or ~/.xsession-errors .

I followed the upgrade guides for xorg 1.6 and libxcb

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/xorg-server-1.6-upgrade-guide.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/libxcb-1.4-upgrade-guide.xml

and tried recompiling the x11-drivers which seemed to help in similiar cases,
also downgrading only xorg-server down to 1.5 again didn't help.

I spent some time searching for a solution but without success since i can't come up
with an error message. Help determinig the error source would be really appreciated.

This is the log after trying to start X :
Code:

# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.

It seems you haven't evded driver installed. Try:

Code:
arkano petrux # qlist -CI x11-drivers
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev <--- this one is needed by hal
x11-drivers/xf86-input-synaptics
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel

Look at these topic:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-722498.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-796379.html

This could resolve your issue but I have your same problem and the same video card (intel) and I haven't been able to upgrade to xorg 1.6 yet: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-796337.html.

Good luck

This bug and this post 6005967 may help. I'll wait until both (>gentoo-sources-2.6.31-r2, >xf86-video-intel-2.9.0) will became stable.

missing evdev was not the problem, rather than somehow the combination of 2.6.30 kernel
and xf86-video-intel 2.8.1 , as mentioned in the bug above.

I downgraded the intel to 2.6.3 and got X starting again.

I Will wait for gentoo-sources-2.6.31-r2 and xf86-video-intel-2.9.0 to become stable
as well, until then staying with intel 2.6.3.
Thanks for the hint, bonzai.it !

Thanks to you. I hadn't even thought of downgrading...
That's works for me too!

I just tried reverting back to kernel 2.6.30-gentoo-r6, xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1, xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2 but X still just gives me a black screen. Startx for some reason works as root starting kde 4.2.4, but normal user it won't.

If you just type "X" you will get just a blank screen, that is normal behavior.

What does it do when you try startx as normal user? any messages in ~/.xsession-errors?

Is that normal? I thought it used to give a white/black or grey/black display with the X cursor.

When I do startx as normal user, the only thing that appears in .xsession-errors is "startkde: Done."
When it kicks me back to the console, I see
(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exit, 0)
and the same error for vesa and fbdev.
That's with no xorg.conf

If I use an xorg.conf that specifies driver "intel" the errors about modules not existing don't apper, but I get no errors at all. Nothing in .xsession-errors

I can't help with the kde stuff, as I don't run it.
But I'm sure someone else can.

Good luck.

means that it is either not compiled in or you need to modprobe -r the module.

wow, i feel like a genuine retard. It was a KDE problem in my user's profile. I created a test user and KDE cranked right up. I recreated my profile and now it's working fine.

One thing though, what happened to the screen with the X cursor you used to get when you launch X? That really threw me in the wrong direction.

One thing though, what happened to the screen with the X cursor you used to get when you launch X? That really threw me in the wrong direction.

All I know is that it shows as blank now.
Not sure when they went from checkerboard to solid black.

If just testing to see if X understands the xorg.conf,
you can do "X -probeonly" and check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file

I actually found one in another forum that was already configured for the 1000he. Also, I ended up adding a few things from little bits of info here and there.

Here it is if you want to see it:

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
  Identifier     "X.org Configured"
  Screen         0  "Screen0"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
  Option "DontZap"   "false"
  Option "AutoAddDevices" "on"
  Option "AutoEnableDevices" "on"
  Option "AllowEmptyInput" "on"
EndSection

Section "Files"
   ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/local"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
   FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Section "Module"
#    Load  "dri"
    Load  "glx"
    Load  "extmod"
    Load  "record"
    Load  "dbe"
    Load  "dri2"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier   "Monitor0"
    VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
    ModelName    "Monitor Model"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  Identifier  "IntelCard"
  Driver      "intel"
  VendorName  "Intel Corporation"
BoardName   "Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller"
  BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"
  Option      "AccelMethod"   "UXA"
  Option      "Tiling"           "False"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Monitor0"
  VendorName "ASUS"
  ModelName  "eeePC 1000he"
  Modeline   "1024x600" 48.86 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622 -Hsync +Vsync
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier "Screen0"
  Device     "IntelCard"
  Monitor    "Monitor0"
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     1
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     4
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     8
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     15
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     16
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Viewport   0 0
    Depth     24
    Virtual 1280 1024 #Set to resolution of CRT/External
  EndSubSection
EndSection

Although it does say "Identifier "X.org Configured" so I'm guessing it's based on Xorg -configure

But now that I've fixed my problem, X will work without an xorg.conf as well.

By the way, for anyone interested, I'm now working on gentoo-sources-2.6.31-r2, xf86-video-intel-2.9.0, and xorg-server-1.6.5. Everything looks like it's working.

backup that one and go through the Xorg page in the handbook, see if that fixes it

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml#doc_chap3

You should have a look through all the guides, there are ones for almost everything:

Why don't you try to just remove your xorg.conf. If you use evdev and hal it should works fine as for me

Code:
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

actually my xorg.conf is essential

Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "on"
    Option "AutoEnableDevices" "on"
    Option "AllowEmptyInput" "on"
EndSection
