i was going through the installatiion following it on lynx. when after i did the "emerge sync" step....that command stoped working....it either stoped working after that or after "source /etc/profile" but i think it was because of "emerge sync" made me verry mad because then i had to reboot into here again......anyone know why it did this?

I'm not sure if I undertood your question, did
Code:
emerge sync
stop working?
In the installation, you had to chroot, did you chroot again when you've rebooted? Remember that you have to follow all the steps described on the installation manual.

Tip: It seems that your problem is at the beginning of installation, try doing it all again, there are only few steps.

Hope it helps, post again if you need.

Welcome to gentoo :)

Well, after "emerge sync" you still have to do a bootstrap thing...
Are you starting from stage 1?

You can boot from the Gentoo CD again, chmod like you did the first time and continue.
Remember: lynx was on your Gentoo CD, not on your chmodded console. That is, you have to go to Alt+F2 to get to your Gentoo CD, and Alt+F1 to go to your chmodded console (That is, if you did chmod on the first conesole.)

Good luck.

Yes. When you chroot, it is like you've booted from that new installation. Because there is nothing there yet, you won't get lynx.
If you get to other terminal, then you're back again on the (really) booted LiveCD (Gentoo Install CD).

There is nothing wrong starting from stage 3, but I definitely recomend you to get a new gentoo CD. You can get it at: http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/releases/x86/1.4/livecd/ and selecting the appropriate one for your processor.

If you got a Pentium 3 you should get the P3 CD. Just the P3 CD, no need to download the i686 at all.

If you really want to emerge everything, get the stage 1. Then you'll get a really custumized linux installation, for sure. But the bootstrap thing take up alittle time, like 2 hours, I think. But it's a big gain, in the final.

Recomend stage 1! :)

Don't be afraid of installation, that install manual covers it all. Just read it carefully.

About the discs, take a look on the documentation, they are all 100%.

The installation manual is avaible at gentoo site, on the left bar, as "x86 installation".
