Ok, over two weeks in on installing gentoo, and I still don't have close
to what I would have with -any- other distro. I am about to give up on
this dsitro, with 2 weeks lost in install.

But I can't find my cd-rw. I was able to get a /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 with
the first setup. But it is a cd-writer, and I was to able to burn disks. I put
the added: "hdc=ide-scsi" as stated in the install guide in grub.conf. Now
there is no /dev/cdroms/*, no /dev/hdc. and no /dev/scsi/*.

Where did my cd-rw drive go? How do I get to it? Don't make me think
gentoo was a -big- mistake.

I needed to put "ids-scsi" in the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
file. Then the cd has shown up in /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd,
and soft links have shown up in /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdroms/cdrom0.

Was there a note to put this module in the autoload file? If so, then I missed
it. Plus what modules do need to be put in this file, and which don't?
All of the other loaded modules are not in this file.

There should have been note on kernel parameter "hdc=ide-scsi" in the Gentoo Install Guide (at least there was when I installed it). The entries in autoload file depend upon what modules you have. (You may have compiled your modules into your kernel.) If everything is working, you are fine :-)
