sheesh. this is an annoying problem. emerge xfce4 gives me "no ebuilds to satisfy xfce4".
emerge gnome and i get told that i need x11-libs/cairo-1.6[X] and that it is not a valid package file. it isn't a masked file according to package.mask. emerge --update world emerge --update system, and emerge --update portage all tell me my system is up to date. well, just a little bit annoying.
any suggestions on how i might fix this? I kinda have my heart set on xfce, but gnome is my second choice.
edit: after the cairo error, it says "Change Use: +X". I'm thinking this is important. Sorry, I'm really new to gentoo. I'm not very experienced in Linux in general, but I know the basic stuff. just so ya know! _________________ Do not take ridiculous posts(if any) too seriously.

Try "emerge xfce4-meta". You might still get the cairo message, though... _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

OK, this works. thank you. I managed to emerge xfce4-meta. I still have a problem when i try to start it. it tells me this:
dbus-launch failed to autolaunch D-Bus session: Autolaunch requested, but X11 support not compiled in. Cannot continue.
and this:
Unable to determine failsafe session name. Possible causes: xfconfd isn't running (D-Bus setup problem); environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is set incorrectly (must include "/etc"), or xfce4-session is installed incorrectly.
What this says to me is that something i don't know about picked a poor time to go horribly wrong, OR I need to reinstall all the packages associated with xfce AGAIN. I'm thinking i will have to reinstall xfce, but weird things do sometimes go wrong. please advise. _________________ Do not take ridiculous posts(if any) too seriously. |

Is the D-Bus system-service running (have you "rc-update" added it to the runlevel you're using)? _________________ "Anyone who goes to see a psychiatrist should have their head examined!" |

Use eselect profile and choose 10.0/desktop profile and run emerge -avDNut world.
Also rc-update add hald default after that. |

all that stuff works and now i get a flash of color before X crashes. emerge world tells me that my dependencies have been masked: i need "sec-policy/selinux-openldap". bummer. I guess i'll just have to unmask it, right? Now it tells me I have circular dependencies. Augh! this is frustrating. oh well. _________________ Do not take ridiculous posts(if any) too seriously. |
