hi,
i have installed gentoo and than the xorg-server on my thinpad x31. Xorg -configure worked. running X -config /root/xorg.config.new doesn't work (black screen). i tried different changes in the xorg.conf.new. maybe xorg tryes to use the vga-port?
infos about the thinkpad x31:

but i used a gentoo-minimal-cd 2007.0-r1. but i think this is not relevant.isn't it? |

Well it could be relevant. Sometimes different version combination can cause problems.
Are you running unstable?
The latest stable is gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r6. This or may not may not be the solution - not sure, but it is a possibility.
You could also try without an xorg.conf file. Try with a minimal xorg.conf file too, something like this:

You need CONFIG_MTRR=y
look in
Processor type and features ---> [*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support |

i do have MTRR in the kernel and egrep gives MTRR=y. the output of egrep above was uncomplet, i did forgot to search for MTRR in egrep. i'm so sorry
