I would like to know how people who are really paranoid about security use this protocol. Do you just use proxies on a certain client and if so know a good site with a proxy list? I have heard others saying they SSH to a remote location and irc from there. Any help at all is appreciated. Thanks!

IRC servers check for public proxies and ban them to prevent attacks.

If you want to be paranoid, you need to get a shell account somewhere, various companies offer this, you can then run a bouncer such as muh, or ssh to your shell and run an irc client there, as you said.

Alternatively there's iip ( http://www.invisiblenet.net/iip/index.php ) which is an irc network that uses a mixmaster system to protect its users.

Some IRC servers are actually on to it and support SSL connections to it. Only a few clients (like kvirc) support it, but I wouldnt use it any other way :)
