Logitec Cordless KB

This is perhaps a multi-media question ....
Im using a logic cordless Duo pack
as Root I start X and the keyboard maps from my XF86Config and all the short cut keys work in mplayer ie. volume, chapter select and so on.
But when I start x as a user none of these work .... it is a setting in the X config so I have not mapped them manually. I thought all settings of these sorts given they are in the X config should work forall users is there something Im missing ??? permission ??? missing files ???? I could map them manually but that hardly seems the point given it all works by default ?????

any help would be fantastic .... thanks guys

I have also seen a post about xmms and this KB and mouse although that may seem a solution on the surface it doesnt tell me why it works as root ?????
