What does this do? I don't have an ATI option, but presumably I used to since opengl used to be fast. What exactly does eselect opengl set do?

type 'eselect opengl help'

If you can no longer select an option you used to have, try re-emerging that package (the driver package).

My ATI radeon card used to work fine and then it stopped working from updates about a year ago. Now I've gotten it mostly working, but opengl still doesn't work. I don't have an ati module in /usr/lib/opengl and I found someone who supposedly has a radeon card working with opengl who didn't have to use eselect opengl... so... not sure what the problem is. I don't have a "VIDEO_CARDS" line in make.conf, but that's for a good reason and it worked before.

Well, here's some suggestions.

If I need an ATI option in eselect opengl, how do I get that? Why isn't it there one, even though I have xf86-video-ati and "opengl" in USE and "radeon" listed for xorg-server and mesa?

The other guy I talked to does not have an ATI option but seems to get decent framerates. In that case, does anyone know how X knows to use its own opengl implementation versus the driver implementation? Is there a flag? A library link? etc.?

first of all, you have obviously never read the documentation.

Second, if you only have the xorg arti drivers installed, you don't have an ati option. You only have an 'ati' or 'nvidia' option, if you install the closed source ati-drivers/nvidia drivers:
x11-drivers/ati-drivers
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers

if you have a R600/R700 card (2XXX, HD3XXX, 4XXX, 5XXXX) you should install ati-drivers to get working 3d.
Older cards are supported by the opensource drivers just fine.

Either way, with only the opensource drivers you don't have to set ansything with eselect opengl.

Good to know, that's the impression I got from the other guy. Well then do you know why my framerates might be so bad? Is there some reason why X wouldn't use the open source ati drivers?

as long as you post zero information: no

start with:
Xorg.0.log
xorg.conf
hardware

I think it is using the opensource ati drivers.

Thanks for the help, energyman76b. :)

Well I'll post some of that stuff, I just figure it would be a simple question to someone who is familiar, and there's no obvious errors. Also it worked before with the same setup.

I'm still not sure what you're asking. Are you asking "what" eselect does? what opengl does? Or is it a "how"?

I've heard two things that stand out:

a) why don't I have an entry for ati or radeon in the eselect opengl list?
b) opengl doesn't seem to be working; it seems slow; why is it slow?

energyman76b definitely answered my question regarding esleect opengl. Its not used for the open source drivers.

But opengl is still really slow whereas it was fine a few months ago. And I think X isn't using the ati opengl implementation but its own. Or maybe that's a mesa setting. So how do I get X to use the ati opengl?

if it's slow then it's very likely not actually running

Which drivers are you using? If you're using the radeon or radeonhd drivers, you won't have an ati option, you'll only have the xorg-x11 option. This is normal.

If you use fglrx you'll have an ati or fglrx option. (I don't know which it is, but regardless, you'll have something other than xorg-x11)

Like I said, I'm using xf86-video-ati and open source radeon drivers, and I do get now that eselect opengl is only for proprietary drivers. I should probably change the name of the thread. But how can I see what opengl implementation X is using? Or why its not using the ati drivers?

in X.0.log
Code:
(II) GLX: Initialized DRI GL provider for screen 0

try
Code:
erm67@linux:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

ATI opensource drivers are broken lately anyway and are being rewritten I also noticed a sharp drop in fps.

Maybe you should use EXA instead of the old XXA but with my card the glx fps dropped even more with it ....

energyman76b definitely answered my question regarding esleect opengl. Its not used for the open source drivers.

But opengl is still really slow whereas it was fine a few months ago. And I think X isn't using the ati opengl implementation but its own. Or maybe that's a mesa setting. So how do I get X to use the ati opengl?

*sigh* you don't understand.

THERE IS NO 'ATI' opengl when using the xorg ati driver you are using!

there are TWO opengl implementations:
ati (amd) fglrx, with the closed source ati-drivers. Only available and usable when you install and use the fglrx driver (ati-drivers). Also unavailable for your card.

MESA used by ALL opensource Xorg drivers, like 'ati' or 'radeon'.

If you only have one opengl implementation installed, you have mesa. And when you only have one, there is nothing to select from.

AGAIN: IF YOU DONT INSTALL CLOSED SOURCE DRIVERS YOU ONLY HAVE MESA - AND THAT IS THE RIGHT ONE.

Now why is opengl slower?

Several possibe reasons:
your xorg.conf.
you used ati-drivers in the past (attention: ati-drivers don't support your card anymore. So don't install them).
some kernel config clusterkerfluffle.

*roll eyes*

eselect opengl list

post the result, will you?

You know what, I don't think anyone here can help me. Its probably just a regression bug in the ati drivers.
