|
|
Hi there I am reasonably new to Linux and have been recommended by a friend to try gentoo. I have been trying to get the minimal installation cd working the last couple of days but I figured out that my wireless doesn't work off the cd so I am waiting for a cable, nevermind that just now!
Anyway I would like to know how to make a 64bit Linux os as I have 4gb of ram and want to use it all. I have been using the handbook and I haven't found anything to do with 32 or 64 bit systems.
Cheers. |

cambuchan,
Welcome to Gentoo
Start reading with the Handbook for your system.
You almost certainly want the amd64 version, even if you have an Intel CPU. The other 64 bit systems are much rarer and you would know if you had one of those. _________________ Regards,

Thanks for the reply Neddy.
So the minimal install iso in the amd64 folder in the releases folder in mirrors?? Thats all I need? Thats great I imagined having to write alot of code or something!
Another question. What stage3 tarball will i use since its a different minimal install or will I just use the one in the x86?? Or does it not matter that the one in the amd64 tarball is under "hardened".
I'm using an intel quad core cpu.
cheers

cambuchan,
You need the stage3 with amd64 in its name.
The x86 stage3 is for Pentium 1 CPUs and older
The i686 stage3 is for a 32 bit install on Pentium Pro, Pentium2 and later CPUs ... including 64 bit CPUs _________________ Regards,

Ahh! I see
looks like Iv been using the wrong minimal install cd :O oops
so to clarify, I will use the amd64 minimal install cd with the "hardened" stage3 tarball in th amd64 folder? Even though I am using an intel processor?
I'm sorry but I cant actually find the i686 handbook.
cheers |

Hi All,
I am wondering :
Can I some sort of "copy" the minimal CD onto harddisk, and configure grub to boot from harddisk?
The handbook procedures use the minimal CD just to boot up the system. Stage 3, portage tree, etc are needed.
If I just want the function of the minimal CD, give or take, can the "copy" approach works? |

You realize you've resurrected a 7 month old thread to ask a question that should be in a new post? Ok sorry , couldn't resist.
I can't imagine why you would want to just copy the min install cd but if you insist on that approach, I'd recommend installing systemrescuecd on your harddisk.
It has more functionality than the min cd. Instructions are here: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_Easy_install_SystemRescueCd_on_harddisk. |

I use SystemRescueCD to install all my box, because it comes with Xfce and I can use firefox to check the forum or post some problems too.
The LiveCD method is really the best. |

ha ha ha ah
in fact, i do not realize it until you mentioned it.
I am thinking of min cd because i need a bare kernel and root tree to do one thing: run xen.
I am still research how to make a min xen hardened amd64 setup....seem kernel 2.6.32 is the common point...
may be rescue cd amd64 using hardened profile, emerge world, xen patch......hmm....may be linux-vserver too...
( oops....should be another thread !! ) |
