Weird routing/firewalling issue with FTP.
I have a new webhosting service, and went to upload a handful of files to their FTP server. On trying to connect, I get a "No route to host" error with both the CLI ftp tool and gftp. I had a go pinging the server, which worked fine, so the routing itself is obviously alright. Same deal with a traceroute.
Delving a little deeper, I fired up tcpdump to try and see what exactly was going wrong, and had the following ICMP thrown at me (xyz.abc.net being our friendly FTP server):
Code: | 22:58:52.375850 IP xyz.abc.net > dell.local: ICMP host xyz.abc.net unreachable - admin prohibited, length 68 |
Now, can anyone tell me what that means and/or what I should do about it? I'm 99% sure it's nothing my end - I have no firewall rules relating to outgoing traffic on either the local machine or my router. Other than this issue, my internet access looks to be functioning normally. |

The other end is generating an ICMP unreachable, subtype "administratively prohibited." This means someone is actively refusing to allow that traffic, but is being nice enough to tell you about it instead of just ignoring the traffic entirely. Are you sure ftp access is permitted with this host? |
