OK, so rickj's solution is correct, and works. Though if the file .xinitrc exists it overrides the XSESSION variable.

Also the file /etc/rc.conf points out that the available sessions are located in /etc/X11/Sessions/

You can override this ofr an individual user by setting XSESSION locally in .bash_profile.

Thanks!!

Jon.

Yes, a one-slider "get rid of the crap" control. I want that!

I thought KDE4 was supposed to be better for laptops? I'm thinking maybe for low-resource systems we shoudl use a lightweight wm, there are a bunch around that will run most KDE and gnome apps.

Perhaps. I have laptop with SSD, so from the point of view of managing power consumption it is very simple - it is CPU, screen and radios. You can also
think of powersaving on USB bus or putting wireless into powersaving mode, but these are relative peanuts, if not questionable savings.

Screen and radio are trivial - either on or off, just don't leave then on, when not needed.
CPU is a main game. Most important is to allow it to spend as much time as possible in low power mode. sys-power/powertop is your friend to see
what's going on. The killers are programs that wake up (not necessarily use !) CPU continuously - some stupid applet that frequently polls
(couple of years ago I remember seeing applet for power saving that was doing that :) ), some program demanding constant attention. So the environment
best for laptop is the one that does not have those.

There is not much else, actually, beyond that (even reducing CPU frequency is not that important).

Kde is a graphical desktop.
That means you use point and click to start or stop things.
Switching users was built into kde years ago.
No need to type anything, just rightclick in an empty part of the desktop
and you get a dropdown menu with several things, among others Switch User.
Click it and you get another menu where you can even switch to a console
that is active.
The new user will have to login with password as usual.
To go back to the first user you hit ctrl-alt F7.
You can have 4 users this way.
The above is for kde3.5.
In kde4 it's still available but you have to click the K on the left of the panel.
Then you click "leave" which drops you in another menu where you'll find Switch User.
Why go to the cli when it's builtin?
But if you prefer to have it complicated that is up to you of course.
Gerard.

Sorry, I've never liked kdm. Whay do you want to force me to use it? This is a very strange argument. I should not use this feature because you say I'm not supposed to. I must be some sort of non-conformist.

This a very limiting point of view and does not take into account a variety of more complex scenarios, especially in distributed, networked environment.
For example, I frequently run my desktop remotely, through vnc, This means, DE will be started if not literally by startx, then by its analogue.
Moreover, I frequently run separate VNC sessions on the same machine (that, for example allows me to grant viewing access to my collaborators in a particular project), so one needs, in particular, DE that will not be confused by several instances on the same machine (it is major annoyance, for example, that I can't run several firefox instances with the same profile on the same machine - really a narrow focused design )

So while graphical fast user switching is good - it is just for the particular scenario of several people with concurrent physical access to the same machine. Very rare scenario in my working environment, BTW.
