under systemsetting>multimedia>device preference, i've set an external usb sound card as the top prefered device over my built in speakers. However, When I use flash palyer in firefox my laptop speakers play...the usb card works under the testing...

just to make sure, I set all of the setting to put the soundcard on the top, but it still doesn't work.

flash in firefox doesn't know about your kde settings, because firefox doesn't. those settings apply to apps that use phonon as a multimedia backend.

Is there a way to make alsa use the usb first and then the builtin sound card if it's not available?

Look for "Multiple sound cards"
