squashfs 4.0, mksquashfs 3.1

Some system with kernel with squashfs 4.0.
But image of squashfs created with mksquasfs from squashfs-3.4

Squashfs filesystem, big endian, version 3.1

Q: Must kernel read this image ?

I ask becouse the image content rootfs, and i just know, must i search trouble
at another place, or kernel with squashfs 4.0 not reading squashfs 3.1.

AFAIK, since kernel-2.6.29 only squashfs-4.0 is supported.
