Hi people

This week i was installing Gentoo in a new disk using the new minimal cd and everything seemed to be ok, but when i wanted to try the X or fluxbox, i realized that things weren't as smooth as i thought.

Whenever i try with startx, the X server seems to start ok and then it seems fluxbox will start, but instead, the whole thing just closes and get's back to the prompt.

The same computer with the same components was working flawlessly with Xorg 1.5, using evdev, ati-drivers 8.593 and fluxbox 1.1.1-r1.

I don't find anything unusual in the X log, except for the mention of te dri2 module, which I don't know what it is or where it comes from, but since I'm, obviously, doing something wrong, or I'm missing something, I come to you to ask for any help or advice you can offer.

:)

You will see some errors related to the second screen, those are normal, since i was in the middle of configurin the dual head, so I was working reusing and later modifying the old xorg.conf i had in the previous system.

so here are my logs:

in your xorg.conf, all sections are defined twice : monitor, device, screen.

Also, mine xorg.conf is using a particular DRI section.
Here's my xorg.conf (I'm using also fglrx 9.10, xorg-server-1.6 and kernel 2.6.30, on a 24" LCD, so my native resolution will be 1920x1200) :
Quote:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Main Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/local"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga"
EndSubSection
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "blank time" "10" # 10 minutes
Option "standby time" "30"
Option "suspend time" "30"
Option "off time" "60"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
# Option "DPMS" "true"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "DPMS" "true"
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

Perhaps the best way is to rename your current xorg.conf and let aticonfig rebuild a new one, on which you'll simply add the DRI section if needed.

Hope this helps.

I have almost identical issue with op. I did fresh 64-bit installation and ati-drivers do not work in mentioned combination. Startx causes hard lock and only power button helps. Also there are no errors in xorg logfile. Older 32-bit installation in same computer works fine with ati-drivers. I tried also older versions of kernel and ati-drivers in new system without success. Vesa and radeonhd drivers work fine in amd64.

I'm running AMD64 and it works. Probably some weird config file issue.

Much like you, this is the line which most interests me:

Code:
 (EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)

I just managed to update my own drivers for the first time since 8.552-r2. I had this same problem with this same error, and the fix was to re-emerge xf86driproto.

FYI, equery is an awesome tool for figuring out which packages to update, etc.

HTH.

First, re-emerge xf86-input-keyboard.

Second, check your kernel to make sure CONFIG_AGP is enabled. As of 2.6.30,

Code:

->Device drivers
  -> Graphics support
    <*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)

but a search for the symbol should pull it up (in menuconfig, the / key).

Then, if that doesn't do it, try again and re-post with a detailed description of the behavior and the new Xorg log file.

BTW, torch the font paths that don't exist in xorg.conf. They're just taking cycles trying to load and cluttering your config and log files.

First why I have to re-emerge that the "keyboard " thing? anyway I have done it few times.

Second ,here my AGP part in kernel config ,which I have compiled..

Code:

grep AGP /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_AGP=m
CONFIG_AGP_ALI=m
CONFIG_AGP_ATI=m
CONFIG_AGP_AMD=m
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=m

Although I have tried to complied it witin the kernel as normal then a module,but it doesn't somehow,need to check.. 8O

hope this will help. Fonts are trivial matter to solve ,am not worried about that at this moment.

Plus have you notice that one ABI module thing not matching mejor version number 8O ,never seen that fellow before :roll:

I am stuck in one place that why the hell that synaptic fellow is not loading 8O 8O

@calavicci : thanks buddy for the insight.

Here is kernel-config generated my make:

(1) The xf86-input-keyboard thing is for exactly the ABI reason you pointed out; check 3 lines above it:

Code:

(II) Module kbd: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
   compiled for 1.3.0, module version = 1.1.0
   Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
   ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.7
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (4)

It's saying that it was compiled for xorg-server 1.3.0. The ABI has changed significantly in the last few minor versions, so it didn't have the proper calls compiled.

(2) If you already have agpgart support, just try manually running

Code:

# modprobe agpgart

before you try to start X.

(3) Not really sure about synaptics, either, but I don't *think* that should prevent X from running.

@calavicci : clear me one thing every time I have to start X ,then I have to do modprobe agpgart ??

that is why I tried to compile it with the kernel ,but it doesn't, bad luck :?

xf8-input-keyboard upgraded to minor version 2(1.3.2).

Code:

emerge -av xf86-input-keyboard

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.3.2 [1.1.1] USE="-debug" 264 kB

Total: 1 package (1 upgrade), Size of downloads: 264 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] yes

Anyway I will try to restart the X ,then post back within few hours.

PS: Update evdev,mouse,keyboard,synaptics

Thanks again.

Cheers

I've had two similar problems (with nvidia) recently - I've upgraded xorg (and KDE 4.2 to KDE 4.3) and suddenly it stopped working.

In the first case I've upgraded the xorg-server - the X started fine but then it did not respond to any input (keyboard, mouse, touchpad, etc.) - after several desperate hours I've figured out the xorg server was compiled with a "hal" use flag, but the hald daemon was not running. Once I started it with "/etc/init.d/hald start" it started working fine (and then I've added it to the default runlevel of course).

In the second case I've upgraded KDE from 4.2 to 4.3. Then the kdm started fine, but after login it failed and went back to the login page. Then I've noticed the kdm was compiled with the "consolekit" use flag but the consolekit daemon was not running. Once started, it woks fine.

So the bottom line is - have you started all the necessary services?
