Where exactly are environment variables set for processes that have nothing to do with login shells? I know about /etc/env.d and the /etc/profile.env file which is created from it by env-update and the fact that /etc/profile sources /etc/profile.env, but I thought this is only related to login shells. Or is it because init-script are bash-scripts that they also get the environment set in /etc/profile.env? |

You've answred your own question
However, it also depends on what variables your talking about.
for init.d scripts some variables are set in /etc/conf.d files of the same name.
i.e /etc/init.d/apache2 uses variables from /etc/conf.d/apache2
