Better kernel defaults

When building the kernel the default selections should be smarter. If you are going to recommend or require something to be enabled in the kernel it should be default on.

I think this is something beyond Gentoo's control and is in the hands of the kernel developers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Not really; the 'gentoo' kernel source could come with an appropriate .config file with things like devfs enabled.
