I know that rpm support is not a high priority considering that this is a distro based on a completley seperate package system (which i love ). But why is the rpm version in portage still part of the 3.x series. Many rpms now require 4.x and they are now up to 4.0.4 i beleive, why so out of date?

Um...because rpm support is not a high priority considering that this is a distro based on a completley seperate package system?
Seriously, my guess is it's out of date because the original author of the ebuild script hasn't had the time to update it. Of course, the source files are available, so you can always modify it to support rpm 4.x

Portage works like a dream. Once the packages in the Gentoo Portage system reach high enough numbers, I will never use RPM again.

you kidna missed the point of the question. I have no doubts the portage is WAY better than rpm, i just asked why the default rpm support is so dated. |

No, I got the question. I guess I should have put something more related to the question, but I mainly wanted to throw my two cents in about Portage. |
