I did a fresh install of gentoo last week with the latest sources (linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r8). I installed X as described in the XServer Configuration HOWTO and ran Xorg -configure to generate an xorg.conf file.

When I run X -config /root/xorg.conf.new I get a black screen. I cannot do anything, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does nothing. CTRL-C does nothing. I cannot do anything but power off.

I have an nvidia geforce 6600. After experiencing the above problem I to run through the Gentoo Linux nVidia Guide up until the point it says "fire up X". That seemed to make no difference.

My xorg.conf is below.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"
        Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
        InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
        InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "Files"
        ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/OTF"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load  "record"
        Load  "dri2"
        #Load  "dri"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "glx"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "kbd"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Mouse0"
        Driver      "mouse"
        Option      "Protocol" "auto"
        Option      "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option      "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName    "Monitor Model"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        VendorName  "nVidia Corporation"
        BoardName   "NV43 [GeForce 6600]"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "Card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     1
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     4
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     8
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     15
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     16
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport   0 0
                Depth     24
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I have a functional xorg configuration on another hard drive on my system, but it's running a much older version and I'm not sure what should and should not be different. The only significant differences that I notice are the "Files" and "Module" sections:

Code:
Section "Files"
        RgbPath      "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
        ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/OTF"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/CID/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load  "record"
        Load  "xtrap"
#       Load  "dri"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "glx"
        Load  "freetype"
        Load  "type1"
EndSection

can anyone provide any insight? I don't know where to begin troubleshooting this. I could try changing the modules as in my working conf, but I don't like to take guesses.

That means everything is working correctly - it's just a matter of not well thought
and undocumented defaults change - You need to add "DontZap" in the proper place
(and perhaps that new xkb option too).

Also, considering your xorg.conf, that guide may be a bit outdated and shortly you'll be
running into hal/evdev problem - make sure xf86-input-evdev is installed.

If you want to see the old stippled screen and have ctrl-alt-backspace,
then add the "-retro" flag when you start "X"
as in "X -retro -config <filename>"

interesting -- I will try these out when I get home tonight.

if ctrl-alt-backspace no longer quits X, is there a new keystroke I should be using instead?

There are more up-to-date guides you should read:

xorg-server-1.5-upgrade-guide
xorg-server-1.6-upgrade-guide

The Ctrl-Alt-Backspace issue is covered in the second guide.
