I have an IBM X40 with an Intel 855GM GPU that I have now installed xorg-x11-7.4-r1 and xorg-server-1.7.1 on.

Tried compiling the driver I have been using, xf86-video-intel-2.7.1 but it wouldn't compile against the new xorg.

Simply on startup, the screen goes black and the machine is all locked up. Doesn't even respond to ping.
Have it temporarily working with the xf86-video-vesa driver.

Works flawless here, xorg-1.7.1, 2.9.1 driver, kernel 2.6.31 and i915. Any errors in your log?

No output in the logs, guess it does not even get as far as to write them. Ran revdep-rebuild but that did not help even though it reinstalled a few X-related packages.

What kernel are you running? IIRC the releasenotes of intel-driver state something like "runs best with >=2.6.31" - may be that this really means "bombs out at any other kernel".

Problem persists, hard crash with xf86-video-intel-2.9.1, xorg-x11-7.4-r1 and xorg-server-1.7.3.902. Now running kernel 2.6.32-gentoo-r1.
Works with the xf86-video-vesa driver.

no problem here either but I have x11-base/xorg-drivers 1.6 & x11-base/xorg-server 1.6.3.901-r2
with x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel 2.9.1 and kernel 2.6.31-r6. i915 and other graphics drivers compiled as modules (I recall I had some problems when included in the kernel)
(IBM X40 here also)

Same trouble with my Asus A3L (with Intel 855GM integrated video) :(

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-796122-highlight-.html

Maybe, we shoud think about writing a bug report? But I dont know, how to get some useful debug data...

I've noticed one strange thing: it works fine with vesa on 2.6.27 kernel, but freezes on startx with some newer kernels (2.6.3x), no matter, wich video-driver I use: vesa or xf86-intel-video...

Is this a problem of Intel video driver or it is a new kernel is leading to a system hangup? Or both? o_O

Do you use the new kms feature for the intel driver ?

CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS

If yes, try to disable it and retry.

Thanks for advice, but, as I wrote earlier:

I tried following software versions getting the same results:
Xorg: 1.7.0 (stable), 1.7.99.1(from git, x11 overlay)
Kernel: 2.6.24; 2.6.27; 2.6.30; 2.6.31 (with and without KMS)
Video drivers: xf86-intel-video-2.9.0 (stable), 9999 (git, x11 overlay)

Intel drivers seems to be hard to make them work nowadays.

Hey, I got it working! Even compositing, that didnt work before!

Have set:
/dev/agpgart (AGP Support):
<*> Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support):
<*> Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G (i915 driver)
[*] Enable modesetting on intel by default

that's all?

because well, that is KMS :P

The second option you showed won't be available unless the first option is selected.
And the "Enable modesetting on intel by default" is KMS

So what is different now from before?

Had never bothered with those settings, since I come from an nVidia world I am used to just deactivating the kernel graphics support and letting the binary driver take care of the rest.

Hope this helps tfsoft too!

Good news, I've updated to the lastest Intel video drivers (xf86-video-intel-2.10.0) and now I'm able to startx. There is no blank screen and no system hangup. But after a few seconds image on a screen freezes up :(

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log I can see a dozens of those lines:
Code:

Welcome to hell.
This is a bug with the intel drivers wich is causing problems to many people.
You can follow the bug track here ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24789 )

Riccardo

edit: corrected the driver name

The bugtrack is right, he means intel instead of nvidia.

as reported x11 would just crash my x40 with (the now stable) x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.9.1, luckily the latest testing version (2.11.0) seems to be working :) ...

I had the same problem and I fixed it downgrading the xf86-video-intel package: I can't check the version right now but the package you download with portage is bugged (at least for my hw: dell e6500) and the only way to fix it is to mask the latest package and reemerge it to get the previous version.
