Hi everyone,

I did some searching, and while I came up with some results pertaining to my situation, they didn't fully cover it... so I'm here inquiring.

I have a 3com card (3c59x) and a LinkSys NC100 (tulip) in my machine. prior to putting the linksys card in, the 3com card worked fine (DHCP).

I put the linksys card in, compiled the necessary modules for the kernel, and set up grub to use the new kernel. and yes, I did the 'make modules_install'.

I edited my modules.conf and modules.autoload files, but now, on reboot, I get errors about bringing up eth0... it is unable to do so.

If I do a 'modprobe 3c59x', there are no errors, but upon 'lsmod' it proceeds to tell me that no modules are loaded! If I do a 'modprobe tulip', it tells me it is unable to find module 'tulip'.

The weird thing is, if I do 'insmod tulip' or 'insmod 3c59x', they get loaded, and I can start up networking services just fine, for both cards.

Why aren't my network card drivers being automatically loaded on bootup? The modules DO work, if I insmod them, so I assume they're the correct modules. I shall post my modules.* files in a followup topic, if no one objects.

Thanks, and please help!

I would bet you are having IRQ conflicts. My 3com and 8139too nics don't live togther happily by default. Because of the hardware specifics of a problem like this, I'm a little uneasy about suggesting a solution. I would start by looking at /proc/pci to see if both cards are seen at all. If you can only see one nic, then its probably an irq conflict that can be corrected in the bios. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply, but I'm not sure that answers why insmod works for both modules, while modprobe does not...

Any ideas?
