Ok so I am pretty much a noob to linux that doesn't install itself. I finally got gentoo installed and booting. Now my next step is installing a desktop environment. If you would like to throw in your two cents on whether I should chose gnome or kde feel free as I am still undecided but gnome-look has some cool themes for gnome :-P

so i found the gnome-howto and there is also an xorg install thingy. my main question is does xorg need to be installed before gnome? i followed the gnome howto immediately after being able to boot into gentoo (aren't i supposed to do something after changing USE variables?? like a depclean or something?) and i get this error:

Microknoppix / # emerge gnome
Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=sys-auth/pambase-20090430[consolekit,-gnome-keyring]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-auth/pambase-20090620.1-r1 (Change USE: +consolekit)
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gdm-2.20.10-r2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.26.3" [ebuild])d
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument])

Microknoppix / #

Mind you that I am doing this from Knoppix still as I can't figure out how to get my wireless working from a console. Figured once I get gnome installed I'll tackle the internet issue. Anyways...help?? lol

edit: as i ran emerge -pv xorg-server i realized the problem may be slightly more complicated

:-/ maybe I just need to merge e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1 and util-linux-2.16.1 seperately first and then try xorg-server??

Maybe this link will be helpful to you:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-804640.html

It's my post I posted yesterday, and my second problem is exactly same with your problem. gsoe's reply did work well for me.

Good luck. :)

Hello neybis.

I think you're right about first emerging e2fsprogs separately. If the problem persists you might try emerging a newer version of e2fsprogs. While looking at my system I realized that I have version 1.41.9 of e2fsprogs - so, did you emerge --sync before? If you didn't, do it and then run emerge --update --deep --newuse world (or the shorthand for that which is provided in the post pcandme linked to).

If you emerge Gnome, it will simply pull in whatever it needs from X11. However,
I always emerge xorg-x11 first, since (as you have found) there may be problems
and it's easier to tackle them one at a time.
