Hi everybody
I want to try Gentoo, so I download Gentoo 10.0 livedvd yesterday, when I entered GNOME desktop I really don't know what to do next to install Gentoo on my harddisk. I didn't found any install programme at all. I read handbook and didn't found something to help. When I tried df -h as the handbook said, I got this:

livecd gentoo # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 1013M 351M 663M 35% /
/dev/sr0 2.6G 2.6G 0 100% /mnt/cdrom
/dev/loop0 2.5G 2.5G 0 100% /mnt/livecd
udev 10M 176K 9.9M 2% /dev
cachedir 4.0M 160K 3.9M 4% /mnt/livecd/lib/splash/tmp
tmpfs 1013M 7.4M 1006M 1% /mnt/livecd/lib/firmware
tmpfs 1013M 0 1013M 0% /mnt/livecd/usr/portage

This is about livedvd not my hard disk
Any suggestion is appreciated! |

There is no installer for gentoo.
Follow the handbook closely to install gentoo to a harddrive. Here a link: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/ |

df -h only shows stuff that's already mounted
your hard drive's partitions will not be mounted until somewhere around step 4 in the handbook
look at the output of "fdisk -l" and it will show your hard drive. Before you can go forward with the installation, you will need to partition your disks, add a file system, etc - the handbook describes this in detail. We can help you if you get stuck or confused on a certain part of the handbook, but starting out please do follow the handbook closely or else you will be lost, as will the people on here trying to help.
And just to confirm previous comments, there is indeed no installer for gentoo. This is a system you will be building from scratch, and as such an installer would not be appropriate. _________________ Lost configuring your system?

Thanks all, I know Gentoo don't need installer now. But now my question is where is the stage3.tar.bz2.
I used this command
Code: | find / -name '*stage*i686*' |
I can't find it on my Gentoo 10 livedvd while the handbook tells me I can find it on my livedvd, I tried to download it, but it seems too slow... |

I've never tried to install from anything other than the minimal cd... And from what I recall from my last install I don't believe they are provided any longer. I could be completely incorrect because a dvd is much larger and i could see some logic in it being included.
Although the live dvd is relatively new and this shouldn't be a concern, your best bet is generally to download the latest tarball and snapshot from a mirror, which can be found at the link ndse2122 mentioned.
Once you have selected a mirror the most recent stage 3 for your build would be found in the tree as follows:
releases/x86/autobuilds/current-stage3/
And your most recent portage snapshot would be found in the tree as follows:
snapshots/portage-latest.tar.bz2 _________________ Steve - Semper Fi |

I also only used the minimal install CD. Stage files were not supplied - had to navigate with the links browser and download as described in the handbook. Also needed to grab portage with links. This is a better method as the files on the cd/dvd could get old. _________________ WebServerMasters
