Hi,

I'm a newbie to Gentoo and I'm not a native English speaker, so sorry for my poor English in advance. :)

I've just installed Gentoo on my old labtop according to Gentoo Handbook.

To install one of the desktop environments, I tried to install the X.org server, but I've failed.

The output message of 'emerge -pv xorg-server' is as follows:

Code:
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=app-admin/eselect-opengl-1.0.8" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-admin/eselect-opengl-1.1.0 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
(dependency required by "x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "xorg-server" [argument])

I don't know how to solve this problem. Just a hint or link would be very helpful to me.

Thanks in advance. :)

I have eselect-opengl-1.0.8-r1 installed. According to the package database that isn't masked, at least for the x86 and amd64 architectures. Have you done a
Code:
emerge --sync
since your install?

Thank you for your reply!

I did that command(emergy --sync) just now, and then I got a new message from 'emergy xorg-server' as follows:

How can I install the xorg-server package properly?

Thank you very much! :)

Well, before trying to install xorg-server, you'd better bring your entire system up to date, do:
Code:
emerge -uDavN system
emerge -uDavN world
If you encounter any problems running these commands we'll have a look at that.

The two commands you told seem to be successfully finished althogh there were so many warnings. Afther that, I tried to emerge xorg-server again.

Now, I encounted a problem that looks like some compilation error. The error message is as follows:

Code:
...

This is the tail of the whole ouput message aquired by 'emerge xorg-xserver > error_message 2>&1' command.

I think there is a problem when compiling the LVM package, but I have no idea how can I fix this problem.

Thanks.

Hello,

just a thought (or rather three thoughts)

1) run revdep-rebuild (fixes library linking broken by your emerges (if there are any))
2) emerge again with --resume or --keep-going - so the error will be skipped and other packages will be compiled first. After that you could try and reemerge lvm2
3) you seem to have no video card specified in your make conf. I'm quite positive this is not what causes lvm2 to fail but it might cause trouble later on.

That lvm2 failure is already noted in bugzilla.

Then, how can I fix this problem?

I performed all the Clad in Sky's suggestions, but I still can't install the X.org server.

Now I just have several blocked or broken packages..

I'm considering re-installing the whole system. Of course, I'm not sure whether re-installation can be the best way or not. ;)
