Just made some pretty kconfig on git

New menuconfig theme+default, and added nconfig with a couple fixes and readme.zen support (not sure what the point of nconfig is, supposed to be a menuconfig replacement - but whats wrong with menuconfig)

Anyway, looking for feedback on both things

Or it's more disk access issue? I got 2 hangs recently (moved to zen3 - same config): while extracting big rar archive and installig matlab from 4GB iso file - everything on my XFS home partition while doing other stuff also like watching youtube (considering moving to another fs). What could be the problem? I'm kinda new to kernel debugging - how can I check what caused the hang when the only thing I can do is hard reset?

I got it also in .32_p3 where swap prefetching is disabled

System is not responding - I can do nothing except hard reset - there is also nothing in /var/log/messages. zen 2.6.30 seems OK, but on 2.6.32_zen3 I got hang almost every time while extracting huge rar archive. Once again my config http://pastebin.com/d3725ec7f based on pappy's seeds. Runing Thinkpad t61p.

The r8169 driver seems to be broken as from 2.6.33-rc1.
Code:

r8169: probe of 0000:04:00.0 failed with error -22.

Anyone with similiar issues? Should it be reported upstream perhaps? Not very used to bug-reporting the kernel.

only observation that comes to mind about menuconfig's zen theme is that the menu items in white bold are a little too flashy for the eyes (it's better to have sunglasses on 8) ). beside that I like the dark theme :)

nconfig is fine but I'm using menuconfig from nearly ten years at today, I need something more to switch ;)

sorry keenblade, seeing that you are still on -zen1: have you tried if things get better with later -zens?

ponciarello, thanks. I am now updating my zen and try my chance. I'll be back to report. But I think mme thing is not stable enough on linux. At least my experience is that way. It is very bothering and tiring to boot into windows to get the videos from the sd card of cam.

if also latest stable fails (and so the problem is not zen related) maybe you better report on lkml ;)

Mine is completely different as it's been several kernel versions that the SD card reader is rock stable (especially on Dell laptops). At least with Gentoo sources.

What is the chipset, brand of your sd card reader? Next laptop, I'll choose an sd card reader like choosing a graphic card or cpu specially.
Btw with zen4 it still fails with the same errors. I updated my previous post for the outputs. I'll try gentoo-sources and linus git, when I have time.
Thanks guys.

As in most Dell laptops, it's a Ricoh card reader. On my Studio laptop it's a R5C832. Before that I had an Inspiron 9400 and it was again a Ricoh card reader -- don't remember what chipset however. For the record, I happened to be able to read on my Inspiron 9400 a 4GB SD card that a friend could not even read under Windows! :D

request:

could you guys please pull in btrfs 0.19 for 2.6.31 ?

according to the version.sh file it currently uses 0.16:
Quote:
File: fs/btrfs/version.sh

#!/bin/bash
#
# determine-version -- report a useful version for releases
#
# Copyright 2008, Aron Griffis <agriffis@n01se.net>
# Copyright 2008, Oracle
# Released under the GNU GPLv2

v="v0.16"

0.19, even compared to 0.18 has much performance improvements and fixes

many thanks in advance

Have you tried using the r8168 driver from RealTek? I had fairly good luck with version 8.015.00 from 2009/11/27. The instructions in the README didn't quite work for me. For example you need to ensure that the /lib/modules/$(KVER)/kernel/drivers/net/ directory already exists before doing a make install. You could just add the line:
Code:

   mkdir $(KMISC)

to the "install:" section of src/Makefile.

This is not a problem with zen-stable, local problem - probably due to lack of a make clean or something, possibly if you edited the tree then that may have upset something - but probably make clean ;) otherwise do a git reset

That file alone is just wrongly versioned, not a big deal (email cmason to make a minor commit or something).
Trust me, I'm way ahead of you. 2.6.31-zen and 2.6.32-zen have been running the latest btrfs from btrfs-unstable.git/2.6.33, which is PAST 0.19 by far, in terms of speed, stability, and some features (you want btrfs-progs-unstable.git too)

I just installed my new hard drive (Samsung f3), and moved my root and home to btrfs partitions, and it's never been faster ;)

I won't tell people to use btrfs, especially of the gentoo community because they can get crazy with stuff still being developed - but it is relatively stable (stable in terms of, won't eat data or crash or anything - disk format changes are rolling from here on out, so not a big deal) - and it's the fastest FS in the kernel in every test case except one (that is, reiserfs wins moving A LOT of really really small files), reiser4 beats btrfs in this category too (but it doesn't beat reiserfs) - btrfs isn't far behind and it does win in every other category :D (ignore phoronix tests, they are either meaningless or done incorrectly --- notice the conclusion that ext3 is the fastest in the kernel :P)

Reiser4 isn't suitable for desktop usage because of the extremely poor fsync performance, this is the part of it that becomes apparant almost immediately after formatting, and you would definitely feel lag-out or lock-up situations because of it - it also tends to become fragmented more and faster than the other FS's - which contributes to slowness too (although not noticable at first, it takes awhile). -- I bring it up because a lot of people are using reiser4 on here, and I'm not quite sure why - btrfs doesn't suffer from either of these problems (and is faster - atleast as of 2.6.32 and 2.6.33 helps)

I've seen the changes at gitweb but wasn't sure whether they were the latest and greatest :)

I'll start using it for my portage-partition and probably also for a small backup-drive,

I won't and can't rely on it on my bigger drives since in case of a failure this would kill my future life and profession

so it's good to hear that it's getting better and more secure than reiser4, reiserfs and all other filesystems

to be honest - I'm kind of fed up with reiser4's fsync slowness (currently I'm only using it on /usr/portage) so I'd mainly be relying on reiserfs, some ext4 partitions and few btrfs [feels like a good mix]

Thank you very much, Sir, for your detailed answer :D

Adjusted, they aren't deadly white anymore (only when they are active)

I like nconfig because of the quicker switching around with the arrow keys and function keys, plus shift+? is help, it seems less clunky although the colors and such could definitely use some work.

just stopping in to say thank you guys for your work in putting these sources together
I'm probably not advanced enough a user to *fully* appreciate what all has been added, but this is easily the most "snappy" kernel I've ever run (.32-zen3 atm), unbelievably stable actually too, and with the inclusion of things like the latest btrfs work methinks it will only get better.

I will be gradually shifting things to btrfs once I rebuild this laptop, but alas a server rebuild is my first priority.

Anyway..thanks! Sorry to clutter the thread with unrelated stuff, I can always change this post later to something more relevant I guess :P

:?: menuconfig's zen theme? What's that? (Forgive this n00b question BTW; I am with Zen sources...)

if you checkout -zen4 you'll see that "make menuconfig" shows a different theme and that you have another target "make nconfig" :)
