after I did a fsck I can't halt/reboot/hibernate! I have no idea if the fsck has anything to do with anything, but it's since I did that that halt/reboot/hibernate fails.

the screen goes black then nothing happens. I have to manually power off, i.e. use the power button on my laptop. thus, I can't reboot, can't hibernate - only power off by using the power button. help!

everything works in Windows 7, btw...

Sorry, but not enough info for a helpful answer.

Qustions:

- only when trying to shutdown down from a Gui? which one gnome kde whatelse...

- tried to do so after switching to a console, log in as root and did a # shutdown -h now or a # poweroff ?

- not done an update before?

- does your kernel support apm (for very old Laptops) or acpi for newer Hardware

- show logfiles and more....

Regards, Andy.

Can you post this :

Code:

# emerge --info

Maybe it's because that you need consolekit or something else.

1. halt/hibernate/reboot in general.

2. no, but I will after class, and update you when I get home.

3. what do you mean?

4. yes of course. everything worked like a few days ago.

5. which ones?

uh... I did hibernate as root in vt, instead of with sudo in urxvt... and now it works. like, it just works. "hibernate" as root seems to have fixed the problem. but that doesn't make any sense.

in one way I'm happy that it works again... but in another I'm thoroughly confused as to what fixed it, as well as what was broken in the first place.
