I am attempting to install Linux ppc 2.4.21-ppc-r2 on my G4 powerbook. The live cd boots fine and I have been able to compile the kernel from a stage 3 tar. However, when I reboot the system I get the following error as the kernel is coming up:
VFS: cannot open root device "hda4" or 03:04
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 03:04
I pretty much took the config parameters in make menuconfig as is checking only the ones specified in the install instructions. (which were set right as defaulted)
mac-fdisk /dev/hda gives the following output:
/dev/hda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 31.5k Partition Map
/dev/hda2 Apple_Bootstrap untitled 1M NewWorld bootblock
/dev/hda3 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap 1.5G Linux swap
/dev/hda4 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 untitled 54.4G Linux native
Block size=512 Number of Blocks=117210240
DeviceType=0x0, DeviceId=0x0
------------------------------------------------------------
fstab is:
/dev/hda4 / xfs noatime 0 1
/dev/hda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
-------------------------------------------------------------
yaboot.conf is: (listing only vaues I think matter for brevity)
boot=/dev/hda2
device=hd:
partition=4
...
image=/boot/vmlinux
root=/dev/hda4
Does anyone see anything wrong with this config? I have seen postings about x windows on my 17" powerbook with the geforce chipset so it has to be something simple that I have missed. Should I be looking closer at the make menuconfig options since it looks like the kernel started trying to boot? or could it still be a yaboot.conf issue? Any help would be appreciated. |
