Hello. I have been getting hit with problem after problem
with my installation of Gentoo 1.4
After my 5th install I finally got
logged in to my system. I am using lynx
to post this message cause my brain is tired, and I do not know what to do now..
The problem I am having is I cannot
compile kde or gnome or any window manager
in kde it locks at kde-base (50% done)
gnome will lock as well. I have tried
fixpackages, emerge sync, updating portage
,cooling down my PC with open case and
Fans. I have been fighting with this compile since 7:30am this morning
it is now 5 pm. I did what was posted in the instructions to cp -a (cd packages to usr portage
as explained. but to no avail.
any suggestions? PS I would search but lynx really blows _________________ Yeah... I got nothin for this field! |

Sounds like it might be a memory issue, seeing as how you have to do alot of work (ie fill up the mem) before it crashes. Maybe swap out your mem? It might work. _________________ Amatures built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic |

Sounds like hardware:
Check CPU Temps, voltages
Also check ram... if you have more than one dimm, take one out and try running on just one..
Check kernel too.. what motherboard do you have? what kernel are you running? Are you facing north-east?
Also, are you overclocking at all ? |

Thanks guys for the Tips. it seems in my opinion to be a RAM Problem. I ran "memtest" from the Gentoo LiveCD and it rebooted the machine with in 45 sec to a Min into the test.
BTW The Hardware is as Follows
Kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 ( i know this off by heart now from fixing GRUB )
Athlon 1000MHZ (I put a Volcano 8 SE as a Heatsink an No Overclocking in here)
Legend Via Motherboard
2 X 256 SDRAM PC133
Nvidia G Force 2 MX 200 (ASUS)
RTL8139 NIC
Generic 300 W Powersupply
I am going to buy RAM Soon for the Box so I will try again later. am doing tests still on the RAM _________________ Yeah... I got nothin for this field! |

As a suggestion, it might be worth trying to figure out which module *might* be bad, and just running with the good one. The system might be a little slow with just 256Meg, but it would probably at least get you started. _________________ Amatures built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic |
