I downloaded Blender 2.5 binary ( not in portage yet.), unzipped it into a folder, but now it won't execute from Gentoo. ( it does from the other linux)
Permissions are set to allow any to execute, "chmod -x blender" didn't help.
What am I missing.?

Thanks, but chmod +x blender didn't help.
If I try to run it from terminal, it fails to open with the message " segmentation fault".
It's odd that it still works from the other os. :?

strace it

emerge strace if you don't have it already

then assuming you've already made the file executable (which you have)

Code:

strace /path/to/binary

look for anything that mentions permission denied, or ENOENT

It could be the case that your other linux system has things laid out in a way this app expects, whereas gentoo does not
strace should help you hunt it down

Strace looks like a nice tool. Thanks.
Quote:
strace /home/Blender/blender-2.5/blender
execve("/home/Blender/blender-2.5/blender", ["/home/Blender/blender-2.5/blende"...], [/* 56 vars */]) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

So it is a permissions problem. I even tried re-downloading and unpacking it as normal user, I tried changing owner, and I tried running is as root. No luck.
I suppose I could put in a suggestion to get this version of Blender added to portage. It is labeled as an alpha ( because the windoze version is still missing some functions), but its fairly stable.
I'll also learn to use 'ln' to make a link.
