Recently, I installed Gentoo on this box, starting from stage 3 from the LiveCD. I used genkernel to build the kernel (if that matters). The antialiased fonts looked PERFECT. They were very crisp and clear... I changed absolutely nothing in the config files.
(This is an example of how they looked before: http://www.qbix.org/gaim.png)
I reinstalled Gentoo on the same box today (because of a drive issue, resulting in much data loss ), in almost the same manner, except I started from stage 1 and did not use genkernel. Anyway, now antialiased fonts look TERRIBLE. (They actually looked worse than in this screenshot, but I messed with some hinting settings to get them as they are now... Before, the Xs and Ks looked really terrible, the legs sort of 'faded out' and were just generally entirely too thin. Now they are just way too blurry.)
(Example here: http://www.qbix.org/gaim-gross.png)
Does anybody know what the difference in settings could be? I would really like to get my fonts back to how they were before... |
