assuming you already set up /etc/rc.conf to use Gnome as the default XSESSION?

Code:
startx

*face palm*

Sorry about that.

try

Code:
$(echo /usr/bin/st*rtx)

You need a login manager, starts your gnome automatically in the future.
Read:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml

PS: And don't choose passwords with and 'a' in it or your screwed.
(Sorry, couldn't resist)

You may want to bookmark these now:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml
http://tldp.org/
http://www.google.com/linux

Using the latter with "console keymap" keywords:
http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&q=console+keymap&btnG=Search

Thanks Jaglover, and all the other Gentoo Gurus, I also am coming from Ubuntu 9.10 and need to learn more of the "depths of Linux" as I transition to Gentoo. I appreciate all your patience with us noobs!!! :)

Already the posts have helped me sort out WHAT I need to pay attention to and learn before attempting an install.

You may have already answered this but: should I follow the general install for now, and then make changes for my eeePC later? Or is a totally different install structure since the eeePC has some "interesting and unique" architecture "issues"?

Thanks again!!

physeetcosmo,

The only thing to be careful of on an eeePC is the Solid State Drives.

On early eeePCs with the small SSD, the drive was killed by all the writes that a Gentoo build needs.
Build on a USB 'spinny' then when it works, move the install to the SSD.

All the gurus here were noobs once and we remember it Thats my first post here.

NeddySeagoon,

Thanks for the reply, I have seen many "suggestions" to "build" my Gentoo on an external then ghost it (I am assuming that's the best way to do it?) over to the SSD. I didn't realize that was due to the "thrashing" the Gentoo can do to the drive. I will work it with an external I have per your (and others) suggestion.

Thanks for the "noob encouragement" sometimes Linux is overwhelming! :)

Hi, if you want to ghost your installation, you should check the stage 5 backup method here :P

d2_racing,

Thanks for the topic link, I will check if that is the best way to do what I am wanting to do with the eeePC SSD (install externally then copy/ghost over to SSD after install).

Props to the Gentoo Gurus and userbase on this forum site...MUCH better info (and experience) than many other forums I have checked!!!

cuginguilu4,

WPA_Supplicant only provides the crypto for your wireless, you still need correct kernel support and maybe firmware.

Wired is much easier to get to go, then you use the wired interface to get the things you need for wireless.

cuginguilu4,

Code:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562GT 10/100 Network Connection (rev 03)
10:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

Are your wired and wireless network controllers respectively.

The wired driver needs the Intel(R) PRO/1000 PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet support option. That is one of the options under the [*] Ethernet (1000 Mbit) ---> menu. See this page

This wiki looks a reasonable description of how to set up your wireless. It was written for 2.6.25/26 kernels so you can expect better support with more recent kernels.

cuginguilu4,

This page suggests
Code:
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
but there may be later versions.

That link still works

cuginguilu4,

Code:
Temporary failure in name resolution.
normally means that your /etc/resolv.conf file is missing nameserver entries.

Add a line nameserver <IP_Address_of Router> as a work around. DHCP should have provided nameserver lines.
Some broken servers don't in which case you have to set up /etc/resolv.conf by hand and edit /etc/conf.d/net to tell it not to get nameservers via dhcp.

I think you need the "nodns" option

/etc/conf.d/net:

Code:

modules=( "!iwconfig" "!wpa_supplicant" "b43" )
config_eth0=( "null" )
dns_domain_lo="homenetwork"

Something wrong ?

I'm trying to use b43 drivers, but I think something is bad configured somewhere :\

cuginguilu4,

I'm surprised to see
Code:
config_eth0=( "null" )
as that brings the network up and does nothing else.
It won't even get you an IP address.

Does a missing /etc/conf.d/net file work ?
Rename your net file out of the way and do
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
to test.
