Whether in the initial bootup, or trying to start it later after I log in, I get this on every attempt at starting hald:

hiya

can you post which build of hal you're using?
Already see you're on 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 so don't need that.

Do you use any dm stuff? Software RAID?

Is this a new install or one that's been operational for a while?

I don't turn networking on by default, since this is a laptop which is often used without networking, and also connects via any of dialup, ethernet, or wireless.

(chuckles). I have had the machine running for a couple of years, BUT:
1. I just recompiled the entire system (updates to glibc, gcc, and kde 4).
2. I have had problems with most post-2.6.23 kernels (and never with older kernels).

A different kernel produced an oops in udevadm, so I guess this problem has returned (just look at the last couple of posts):
