Hi there,

i have serious problem to getting my xserver started correctly. I installed a new genkernel gentoo on my notebook.
It has a onboard intel graphics card.

When booting the xserver tries to start but stays black for 1 minute after returning to prompt.

I will append my /var/log/Xorg so you can see that the problem is the agpgart thing.
Code:

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
    at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information

I tried several things:
* Set the AGPGART Support within kernel and set the intel drivers within kerne -> Nothing changed
* After trying mknod /dev/agpgart c 10 175 this node is not available after reboot -> Nothing changed

Furthermore there are strange error-messages so i will append my /var/log/messages in the next post:

hiya

can you post your lspci -n, cat /proc/cpuinfo, cat /etc/fstab, and ls -l /usr/src/linux ?

Would also be helpful if you hit pastebin.com and dump your kernel .config there, then share the link with us.

Here my fstab

Code:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency).  It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# The root filesystem should have a pass number of either 0 or 1.
# All other filesystems should have a pass number of 0 or greater than 1.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#

# <fs>         <mountpoint>   <type>      <opts>      <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.

shm         /dev/shm   tmpfs      nodev,nosuid,noexec   0 0

and finally my /usr/src/linux

You mention
Quote:
* After trying mknod /dev/agpgart c 10 175 this node is not available after reboot -> Nothing changed

What about before the reboot? Does it work then?

I also know this was a common problem with older onboard Intel graphics cards... The resolution at the time was to bump up the amount of memory allocated in BIOS or decrease the colour depth set as default in xorg.conf. Any chance you could paste your xorg.conf as well (if it's really long, use pastebin again please)?

I forgot to set the kernel to boot directory. Now i think the AGPGart is working.

After rebooting the screen changes to black one with white underscore on top left side. After 20 seconds a login-screen cames but i have no possibility to type anything. And getting back to prompt did not work so i deleted xdm from runlevel by chroot from live cd.

Now i can get back to prompt.

Lets have a look into the new Xorg:
Code:

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X Server isn't already running

Pleaye consult the....

Very strange is after booting when typing into the prompt startx as root i have to wait about 60 seconds with black screen and after that the fluxbox appears. but there i cannot use mouse or keyboard. Possibly wrong xorg.conf? And why does fluxbox not
start alone...i have the file .xinitrc in my home directory with the command exec fluxbox

When I want to start fluxbox from prompt it complains with Cannot connect to XServer. So what can i do now?
Do you need any additional information/files?

Thanks again
