Which iPaq, exactly? (There's about eighteen different things under the iPaq name.) For instance, I've used an iPaq Pentium III 733 (that shipped with a 4 GB disk, dummies), there's iPaq MP3 players, and there's iPaq handhelds. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

I guess he is talking about the iPaq handhelds because of the ARM cpu. |

I'd assume the iPaq 3600 line that other things like familiar OS run on.
rizzo, iPaq 3635 owner. too pussy to try familar. |

Has anyone made any further headway on this? I would imagine this is a two stage process:
1. Build a boot kernel for the ARM to support your specific ARM platform using your PC development system.
2. Configure portage to cross compile to ARM to a specific directory on your PC development system and then preload a file system with the portage output and put this on your target.
Does this seem right? |

Howdy,
I've done some of this with some success....javascript:emoticon('')
Essentially it operates like the intimate linux distribution, and uses the familar-base as it's host, then swaps to running of a HD...javascript:emoticon('')
Problem is getting the src, +the long time it takes to compile stuff...
If anyone is interested, send me a mail atjavascript:emoticon('') spb@kaizo.org....javascript:emoticon('')

To anyone still listening to this thread,
I've completed a stage1 Gentoo image for the NetWinder ARM platform.
The project history, status, downloads, and install instructions can be
found at the following URL:
http://cvs.gentoo.org/~zwelch/gentooarm.html
This is a work in progress, but we have already begun the development
of a stage1 image for the iPaq series as well. Stay tuned.[/url] |

Hmm... There are many things that use ARM. There's a full list on arm.com
Palms use an ARM processor. So do PocketPCs. As do GBAs. Each one is somewhat different, and the GBA is radically different. So the project's name should really be Gentoo-iPaq or Gentoo-PocketPC |

you would be wrong since zynot is good and dead at this point
i released arm stages for Gentoo at the beginning of May and am trying to make a 2004.2 release so arm will get back onto the official list
you can find stages on our mirrors in the experimental/arm/stages/ directory ... as for net booting, i've posted some nfsbooting stuff i'd like feedback on

Hi, I'm trying to set up a gentoo system for my ipaq 4150, moderately successfully. But it's not that easy - some emerges fail and need manual help. What's the best way to report those bugs and workarounds so the ebuilds might get adjusted? ARM is not a platform supported by bugs.gentoo.org... |

Uh... when I try to file a new bug, category "gentoo linux", I can choose the following archs from the "hardware platform" combo box: All, x86, PPC, PPC64, Sparc, Alpha, Mips, HPPA, amd64, ia64. Nothing else.

OK, sorry for the fuzz, I found it - need to use "New-Expert". |

SpankY, thanks for your answers. What's the status of gentoo-arm anyway? Doesn't look like too many people are using it. This thread is pretty quiet and still I didn't find anything more active. Where do I go to find the secret hidden gentoo-on-arm-linux-community? |

probably because it's never been announced anywhere
we used to have arm in the tree but then when we lost our one arm developer, no one could maintain it so we removed it
a while later i bought some netwinders and so now i'm the sole arm Gentoo dev
i'm aiming for a 2004.3 release now so we can announce official arm support |

This is great. But I think it won't be easy to get gentoo to fully support arm - gcc 3.3.x sometimes generates wrong code or internal compiler errors (compiling gtk+ e.g. is a real pain, and I had to build my handhelds.org kernel with 3.4.1, otherwise it wouldn't even boot without oopses). And moving on to 3.4.1 won't be easy, too, I guess. How do you want to resolve this issue? It's quite a problem here...
BTW - f you need any testing, please tell me, I'll happily torture my ipaq. |

i think these might be related to the bugs arm has with 2.15 binutils ...
i have to devote sometime to tracking down the compile errors the gcc 3.4.1 ebuilds produce with the current stages ... ive been working on arm/uclibc lately ... |
