You need to set the XSESSION env variable probably. Put a line like this in /etc/profile.d/xsession.sh:
Then do an env-update and reboot/relogin. |

env-update and reboot.
Thanks for help but its not working.

Code: | nano /etc/conf.d/xdm |
should look like: (red marks the change)
Quote: | # We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you haven't accidentally configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.

# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm | kdm-4.3 | gpe | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
#
# KDE-specific note:
# - If you are using kdeprefix go with "kdm-4.Y", e.g. "kdm-4.3".
# You can find possible versions by looking at the directories in /usr/kde/.
# - Else, if you are using KDE 3 enter "kdm-3.5"
# - Else, if you are using KDE 4 enter "kdm" without a version
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" #presuming you emerged kde4.3
# Set whether xorg should depend on hald or not. If set to 'auto' then the init
# script tries to determine the dependency on hald automatically, by examining
# xorg.conf files on various locations. If you have built xorg without hal

# may set 'auto' or 'yes' here.
# Possible values are: [ yes | no | auto ]

comment in that file says:
Code: |
Else, if you are using KDE 4 enter "kdm" without a version
|
is the comment wrong? (I use entrance rather than kdm/gdm, so it's easier for me) _________________ Lost configuring your system?

oops. no idea, I gnome. Thanks for the catch.
When my mind dumped, I was trying to get around to saying
Code: | echo "XSESSION=kde4" > /etc/env.d/90xsession
env-update
source /etc/profile |
since /etc/env.d/90xsession seems to be the current location for the xsession global variable. |

methinks XSESSION="kde-4.3"
Code: |
laptop02 ~ # ls /etc/X11/Sessions/
Xsession kde-4.3
|
that assumes your X is functional, which, I'm not entirely convinced of just yet.
Most common issues are people not having 'hal' and 'dbus' in their USE, not having hald and dbus in their 'default' runlevel, and/or not having the right settings in the kernel
We will try getting the session stuff sorted first, since that's easier to fix - but if not we may want you to dump your kernel .config and lspci -n up on pastebin. _________________ Lost configuring your system?

mini ~ # ls /etc/X11/Sessions/
KDE-4 Xsession
used all combinations in 90xsession file and no luck.
hald and dbus are started
not sure if X is functional, if i #startx it crashes.

k, so problem with your kernel
you have KMS=y, but you also have framebuffers
i would suggest removing KMS (kernel mode setting) from the kernel, rebuilding, install your kernel as per usual
i would also suggest doing both AGP_INTEL and DRM for i915 as built-in, not modules.
just to test if this is causing problems, before you rebuild your kernel, edit your grub.conf and on the end of your kernel line add:
Code: | vga=0x318 i915.modeset=0 |
reboot, select the kernel that uses the aforementioned command line settings, and see if you can start X without issue
If you decide you want to have another crack at doing a kernel from scratch, check the links in my sig _________________ Lost configuring your system?
