I've had this issue ever since I installed gentoo back in 2005, and now I'm finally in the mood to get rid of it.
Whenever copying large amounts of data (on the order of gigabytes), everything involved with xorg, except for the mouse, seems to become unresponsive. The issue is a lot worse when one very large file is being copied, rather than many smaller files, but nonetheless the problem is always there. I don't know what to do about it...any ideas? It's a Maxtor 250gb sata hard drive, on ~amd64. |

this is a long standing problem a fix for which appears to be
completely beyond the powers of the kernel devs; for a
lot of ideas see this thread

doing as simply messing about with Linux ...

Probably because they're too busy writing up code for high-dollar enterprises, which is why linux hasn't hit mainstream with the desktop yet. >
Thanks for the link on zen sources though. I liked it, except BFS was giving me issues with steam (steam was extremely sluggish and maxed out the cpu..., oh well). |
