Mouse button stuck in Quake 3

I have an unusual setup for my controls, long story short, I keep mouse buttons pressed a lot during a game. Sometimes (frequently) I get strange mouse behaviour, the left button, right button or both seem to be stuck, the game then stutters or reacts strangely to mouse movement, for example I end up facing the ceiling or floor and I have to release and press one or both buttons to get a normal situation. Q3 is the only linux game I'm playing lately so I haven't made other tests.
I am uncertain but I think I can track this back to when I switched to evdev. Has anyone solved a similar problem? If no one knows here I'll ask in the desktop environment forum.
I run ~amd64.
