Firefox does not seem to be detecting the Java JRE.

I have Sun's JRE installed.

# java-config -L
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
*) Sun JDK 1.5.0.22 [sun-jdk-1.5]


I have the java flag enabled in make.conf and it looks to be enabled with firefox.

[ebuild R ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5.6 USE="alsa dbus gnome java startup-notification


But when I visit http://www.java.com to test my Java configuration with Firefox the site reports a JRE is not installed.

Do you have the nsplugin use flag enabled on sun-jdk?

Ah....I had the nsplugin USE flag with mozilla-firefox. It should go with the Java VM. I re-emerged the sun-jdk with nsplugin and now Java works in Firefox.
