Do you have an xorg.conf or no?

Was wondering because if you did, have you explicitly set the driver to be "nvidia" ? Or did the nvidia driver setup generate an xorg.conf for you?

If you need to make changes and recompile the kernel make sure the /boot partition is mounted first. If you made a separate /boot partition with an ext2 file system and did not build ext2 file system support into your kernel, you will need to boot a cd, mount the gentoo partitions, and enter the chroot to mount /boot.

With the kernel ready:
Code:
nano /etc/make.conf

to include:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"
USE="dbus hal" #not exclusively, other use flags welcome
If gnome is to be your window manager/desktop of choice:
Code:
echo "XSESSION=Gnome" > /etc/env.d/90xsession
<--untypoed
If not substitute for Gnome
Then run:
Code:
emerge -uND dbus hal xorg-server xf86-input-evdev nvidia-drivers gentoolkit pciutils <your window manager of choice>
modprobe -r nvidia-drivers
modprobe nvidia-drivers
rc-update add dbus default
rc-update add hald default
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
nvidia-xconfig
reboot

Thank you so much. I already did setup the gnome as the doc told me. There is no file 90xsession...

The X problem seems solved with nvidia-xconfig, but now i got a strange login window, grey and that i cant get out. When i try logon, a black screen shows up and nothing happens, then i need logon again. Is that the gnome-light?

correct - because you need to create it

do so, and see if startx does what you need.

do not unmerge xdm

you just need to edit /etc/conf.d/xdm and change it to DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

Did you login in it? If so what happened?
After booting to a command line black terminal, logging in, entering startx or xdm or gdm? If so which?
Or is xdm or gdm in the boot run level and you get this on boot-up?
Or this results from some other circumstance? If so what?

The xdm library x11-libs/libXdmcp is emerged with xorg-server and used by default by xinit to give an xdm light.

That is fine as well. If you intend to call GDM directly, make sure you've already covered all of this

So wait, does what it takes you to look anything at all like Gnome?

Or is it just the tiny dots on grey background and the big black "X" ?

post the output of this:

Code:

cat /etc/env.d/90xsession

Xdm is set to start with boot

Code:
Set your DISPLAYMANAGER or install x11apps xdm package
start-stop-daemon /usr/bin/xdm     such file not found
Cound not start display manager       <<< something like that

hmm... i reboot after i saw the X, couldnt load anything i guess.

Code:
lucasxal-debian / # cat /etc/env.d/90xsession
XSESSION=Gnome

Setting up http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/GDM ..[/quote]

edit : tried again. /etc/init.d/xdm restart. Same problem.

That's because you unmerged XDM :)

The init script is still there, but the binary is not

Code:

rc-update del xdm
rc-update add gdm default

If your keyboard and mouse do not work in GDM, make sure you have already done:

Code:

rc-update add hald default
rc-update add dbus default

In fact, it should read:
Code:
rc-update add xdm default

and as DONAHUE showed in /etc/conf.d/xdm
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

then:
Code:
eselect rc start xdm
or
Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm start
