On my Lenovo X61 tablet, happily running xorg-server 1.5 and kde 4.2.2 for quite a while, I just upgraded to the latest stable kernel (2.6.31-gentoo-r6, xorg-server (1.6), and kde (4.3.3). X/KDE is slow as molasses now. Where should I look for reasons? top shows X peaking at 100% of one the processor cores quite frequently, which I don't remember from before.

What process is hogging the processor? If a forum search doesn't turn up any thing about the problem you might consider using xfce or gnome to see if they perform just as poorly.

It could be your $HOME configs that have become "funny". It happens. Generally I nuke the entire ~/.kde4 folder after each upgrade of KDE4

To test this hypothesis, create a new testuser, and login to this account. Start KDE4.

Don't most all kde apps store settings in that directory, including PIM applications? Might be wise to back it up before nuking B-)

Not to worry, I backed it up. :-) It didn't change the behavior anyway. What did was booting into my old kernel, 2.6.27. I'm not sure what I missed in configuring 2.6.31. Or maybe something new, the X11 modules or mesa or something, is not playing nice with the new kernel?

Xorg.0 has all sorts of errors reported, even with the old kernel (no apm, no acpi, no i810 module detected). X has always been an impenetrable mystery to me, so I don't know what to make of it.

Code:

OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

this could be a large portion of the problem

should see something similar to

Code:

meat@laptop02 ~ $ glxinfo |grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset GEM 20091221 2009Q4

I don't remember what gets you to this point - thought it was either mesa or libdrm

check and see if you've emerged or updated libdrm?

EDIT: is your user in the 'video' group? If not, add it - it should be there

That did it! I updated libdrm and then re-emerged xorg-server, mesa, and x11-drivers. Bingo!

Code:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20090712 2009Q2 RC3

Thanks, cach0rr0!

nope, twas given this nickname (well, "C Cachorro") by a Brazilian buddy, and it stuck!

glad it's sorted. I had the libdrm epiphany myself, was definitely a 'holy shit' moment, had no idea things were supposed to be so snappy.

qfile/equery are your friend :P

Code:

laptop02 ~ # qfile glxinfo
x11-apps/mesa-progs (/usr/bin/glxinfo)

laptop02 ~ # equery belongs glxinfo
 * Searching for glxinfo ...
x11-apps/mesa-progs-7.7 (/usr/bin/glxinfo)

Not if the package isn't installed, they aren't, which was my situation.

True. For me, Google has been the only way of figuring out the right package to get some file if it's not already installed.

There is a package content search utility for another distro here: Search the contents of packages.
It isn't always exact, but provides a clue which is pretty close most of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work at all though.
