IrDA question (not laptop)

Hi guys,
I have an idea to command my air connditioner,video, tv etc. troug my computer. I dont have an IrDA sensor, but i would like to buy. Didnt find good info on the subject and wanned to ask here.
In my motherboards manual is written, that i have a plug on the mobo on which i can hook up the sensor. Now, th trick is, i dont know what equipment should i buy. Is it mobo dependant? Are there worst and better ones? Or i just need a small part, and ths built-in my chipset?
I will be glad if you can give me a clue!
