Hi

Installed gentoo last night, no problems there. I've got a strange probem that I don't understand and i'm need some advice on what it is and how to fix it:

(I used genkernel to build the kernel, just because i've not configured one before, not sure that's relevant.)

The system boots up fine, and appears to operate fine when I log in, etc. When I reboot, however, it goes through the usual shutting down of services, gets to the bit where it says "remounting file systems readonly" and then I get about 7 or 8 lines that read:
Code:
do_IRQ: 0.48 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)

The system just hangs and becomes unresponsive at that stage, and I have to force the shutdown with the power button.

I have seen some similar problems reported by others from google searching, like this https://bugs.gentoo.org/252635, but the problems seem to be with the installation cd, etc, which is not the same problem i'm having.

Does anyone know what this is and how i could sort it out?

Jamie

I'll be honest with you, I don't have a clue what is causing this error. If I had to guess, I'd guess that genkernel chose a generic ATA/SATA driver instead of one that is specific to your hardware, but that's just a blind guess.

I can only say it's my opinion that mysterious issues like this tend not to happen when you build your own custom kernel that is carefully and manually matched up with your exact hardware. The effort required to do that is likely far less than properly investigating the error message you have received. I apologize that this isn't really the answer you were looking for, though in the long run I think (again, just my opinion) you'll be better off if you are comfortable configuring and building your own kernels.
