Didn't find this in the FAQ.

I am an author of some programs that have been published in Freshmeat too.
How do I proceed so that someone adds them to the portage system?

I made an ebuild. How can I test it?

root@oktober:~/src/pipes/gentoo# ebuild pipes-1.15.ebuild merge
!!! aux_get(): ebuild for 'pipes/pipes-1.15' does not exist at:
!!! /usr/portage/pipes/pipes/pipes-1.15.ebuild
doebuild(): aux_get() error; aborting.

you usually make a directory called /usr/local/portage and stick custom made ebuilds in there, if you put them in /usr/portage they will be delted at the next emerge sync.

ebuilds live in categories, so whatever/portage/pipe/ will be wrong, i dont know what pipe is, but make a directory with the same name as the fitting category-name from /usr/portage, and stick it in there, as this:

(example guessing it is a tex app):
/usr/local/portage/app-text/pipe/pipe.ebuild

then things should work.
if you go with the usr/local approuch, uncomment the lines in /etc/make.conf
regarding to PORTAGE_OVERLAY

There are detailed descriptions available at the main website, Contributing ebuilds guide and Gentoo Linux Developers HOWTO should get you started.
