When I move around an mplayer window playing a video, the video shows black flashes. I seem to recall that this wasn't the case before (and before could mean several months ago). Any idea what this is?

No idea what it is, but I get it too, for quite some time now. And yeah, it didn't use to happen. If it really bothers you, you could go and figure out which change in MPlayer caused this. It doesn't bother me much, so I haven't done this myself. Also, you could post to the mplayer-users mailing list and maybe one of the MPlayer developers will respond.
One solution, though it's probably more of a workaround than a solution - run a compositing manager.

Thanks for the confirmation and I'll do that. By the way, when using compiz-fusion with wobbly windows, there still is a black flash when the window shape is normal again...
